Bandwidth

Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transmitted at a given moment to a server. The higher your bandwidth, the larger amount of traffic your site can handle at one time. In web hosting, bandwidth is consumed when visitors make requests for files on your Web site and download them to their personal computers. When you add up the total of all files downloaded off of your site in a particular month, your total should be lower than the amount of bandwidth allotted with your hosting plan. Banner Advertisments

Compression

Control Panel

The control panel provided by your Web hosting company that allows you to view the activity on your Web site as well as other features such as changing passwords.

CSS

Cascading Style Sheets. A simple mechanism that allows authors and readers to attach style (e.g. fonts, colors and spacing) to HTML documents.

Demographic Variables

Demographic variables define a human population by their age, geographic location, race, gender, education, occupation or other characteristics.

DHTML

DHTML is a collection of Web-based programming code (HTML, JavaScript, CSS and DOM) which create more dynamic possibilities than basic HTML.

Dial-Up Access

Dial-up access connects a computer to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as ~America Online through a modem and telephone line. Speeds are limited  up to 56Kps (Kilobits per second)

Domain Mail Forwarding

Domain mail forwarding gives you the capability to have e-mail addressed to your Web site domain forwarded to another e-mail address.

Domain Name

Your domain name is your Internet Web address e.g. www.yourname.com.

Domain servers:

This contains the DNS (Domain Name System) information for a domain, and is usually listed in WHOIS records. There are usually two lines of DNS information. The first is typically a site’s primary DNS information, while the second contains secondary/back-up information.

DNS:

Short for Domain Name System which is used to translate numeric addresses (known as IP, or Internet Protocol, addresses) into words.

Domain names: The word sequences users enter in their URL bar to visit your site.

Domain Name Parking:

All domain names have to be stored on a server in order to be purchased. Most domain registration services will therefore temporarily place a newly purchased name on their servers until a hosting plan is purchased or the owner points the DNS to a different site. This is known as parking.

ICANN:

ICANN stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which is a not for profit organization that handles IP address space allocation and most other regulatory tasks associated with domain names.

Image

Can be a logo, photograph, custom graphic, map, or animated graphic. The number of images on one page is determined by the size of the image file(s). Too many and the page takes too long to download (appear in the browser). One option commonly used is to have a smaller image (thumbnail) link to a larger photo to show detail

Image File Format

These file formats specify how images are displayed. Examples are JPEG, GIF and PNG.

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)

Image Maps

Java/Javascript

A programming language embedded in a web page usually used to perform actions and/or visual effects

JPEG is an image file format that is most appropriate to display photographs on your Web site or other images that have many colours and tones.

A company/person that sells domain names through registry services provided by an ICANN approved registrar.

R/S - or the ratio of keyword demand to supply. It is best illustrated with an example:

Keyword A 100 Searches 1000 Google Web Results with that keyword

R/S is 1000 / 100 = 10

Keyword B 50 Searches 250 Google Web results with that keyword

R/S is 250 / 50 = 5

T-1 Carrier

T-1 Carrier, also called DS1 service, is a method of your ISP that provides a fast connection to the Internet. A T-1 combines 24 individual channels each at 64Kbps to provide a data speed of 1.5 Mpbs.

Target Marketing

Theme

A theme provides every page of your Web site so that they have a similar look.

Thumbnail

A small image that is linked to a page with a larger image to show detail. Facilitates download time when there are too many images to have full sized on a page.
