What are hyperlinks? A hyperlink is a text or graphic link on a Web page to another location on that page, to another location on your site or to a location on another Web site. It is important to determine the site layout of your Web site early on so that you can create the hyperlinks to weave the Web that link your pages appropriately. As we surf the net, we ‘click’ on these links and at awe-inspiring speed we may be transferred to another computer and to another Web site anywhere on the planet. "Links" weave the Web that traverses the world making the World Wide Web so special as it makes Web pages alive with interactivity. Provided you have the appropriate URL (Uniform Resource Locator), you can create links to any Web site or Web page in the World. As a Webmaster you can create as many hyperlinks on your Web site as you wish both within your domain and to other Web sites. You may liaise with other Webmasters to create reciprocal links which are likely to enhance your Web site rankings with the search engines. How do I create a hyperlink? Welcome To My Web site”. Now follow the instructions to create that page and create a second page with the words “Thank you for visiting my Web site” and then: File >Save as - and give an appropriate name for the page (use file name ‘page2’). This page will now be saved as page2.htm. Now open your original home page and add to this page the words “Click here to see my second page.” Highlight the word “here” In Frontpage or Word use Insert > Hyperlink (or ctrl + K) and in the box ‘Link to file or URL’ type page2.htm Save the file File > Save or Ctrl + S. Now open the home page in your web browser. You will see that when you click on ‘here’, the second page appears. Congratulations. You have just created not only a second page but also a link from the first to the second. You create a hyperlink to another Web site in the same way by using the URL of the page you wish to link with on the other Domain. You create hyperlinks from a Graphic in the same way. Click on the Graphic and either > Insert> Hyperlink (or ctrl + K) and make the link. Beware though when using graphics for hyperlinks: Clickable images generally confuse users, especially images that contain only graphics. Some that contain both graphics and words are also confusing because users do not know if the images are clickable without using the mouse's pointer ("mine sweeping.") Even with the "sweeping," users are not always sure which areas of an image are clickable, and whether there are several clickable sections on the same graphic. http://www.usability.gov/pdfs/guidelines.html You have now successfully learned all the basic requirements to create a Web site.
