Making a Start

  • Domain Name A website must have its own unique name. I strongly recommend including your main keyword(s) in your domain name.
  • Creating a web page - A web page will have text and usually image content.
  • Coding / HTML - Embedded in each page is coding that instruct web browsers, such as Internet Explorer or FireFox how to display your content. HTML is the most frequently used coding. If you have many pages, CSS should be considered.
  • Web Authoring. Web pages can be created with many programs including MS Word. A good quality web authoring program will do most of the hard work for you. I use FrontPage extensively, even though it was last updated in 2003. If you cannot obtain a copy of FrontPage, its successor Expression Web 2 or Dreamweaver are popular.
  • Hyperlinks - are coded links from one page to another whether the linked page is on the same website or on a different website.
  • Web Hosting and Web Server - You create your website pages on your own computer. You must transfer your pages to a computer (server) where visitors can see your pages. The company owning the web server computer is called a Web Host. You can have your website on a free Web Host but there are many advantages to seek a recommended Host.
  • Uploading - When you visit a web site, your computer "downloads" the pages that you are viewing. The transfer of your web pages to the web server is called "uploading". Programs that transfer web pages from or to a web server are called 'file transfer protocols' or 'ftp' for short. Web authoring programs usually include and ftp that allows you to upload.

 

How can I produce my first Web page?

It takes less than five seconds to produce the simplest Web page. This assumes that you have a program, usually a word processing package such as MS Word:-

File > New > Blank Document

Type anything you wish e.g. ‘Welcome To My Web site’.

File > Save As  - provide document name and Save As HTML document or Web Page according to the options provided.

Congratulations!  You have created and saved your first Web page.

The complexity of a Web page will depend on the amount of text, the addition of graphics and hyperlinks to other pages on your site or to other Web sites. If your Web site is going to be more than a few pages I would recommend using a web authoring program.
